Here Comes Another One

300_harrison.jpgI remember a few years ago when some of our neighbors strongly opposed the construction of a large building proposed by Reynolds and Brown at 300 Harrison Street. I remember being the one and only person who was actually excited by the proposed building's beautiful concrete and steel design. I thought it would have been an awesone addition to the neighborhood - heck, it might have even been a cool place to live. Instead, we fought the beautiful building with all our might, and promptly ran out of steam. This made it easy for the next developer - SNK - to come in and build some of the ugliest buildings ever.

I'm not sure yet whether or not the new development at 300 Harrison will be ugly, but it sure isn't the cool building proposed by Reynolds and Brown.

A Note from the President of the Crucible

(By way of Gary Knecht...)

Dear Friends, Colleagues, People I admire, and Folks it's just been too dang long since I seen ya!

I hope this email finds you well and perhaps even without plans for Saturday night...

For the past six months I've served as the board president of an incredible arts organization in West Oakland: The Crucible.

"The Crucible is an arts education center that fosters a collaboration of arts, industry and community. Through training in the fine and industrial arts, The Crucible promotes creative expression, reuse of materials and innovative design while serving as an accessible arts venue for the public."

And Saturday is the premier of our very own reality TV show on the National Geographic Channel! Dubbed the "Mother of All," each episode involves the fabrication of an out-of-this-world project designed to be the ultimate of its kind. You'll see a refrigerator with a cannon that shoots a can of soda up three stories in a controlled arc; and a raft that glides as smoothly on top of land as it does on water -- all lovingly and daringly fabricated by Crucible design teams. (This will be a first for me as well, as I have not watched TV in 14 years; I hear there are more than 4 channels now!)

My fellow board member Fred Winslow will pour molten bronze into a mold; fire performers will sling flaming objects around; and we'll be auctioning all sorts of goodies! You could win a barbecue party with The Mother of all "fire" trucks, or a chance to appear as a guest builder on a future episode! Catch quality entertainment as Crucible characters weld, carve and cast their way to TV superstardom.

You may have seen the article about the show and the Crucible in Wednesday's Chronicle.

Refreshments and fire-cooked cuisine will be served. Suggested donation $10. Rsvp is not required, but I'd love to hear from you either way.

Please see our website for directions. We'll have folks onsite directing you to the best places to park.... most likely at the lot between the Crucible and the BART station on 7th Street.

Hope to see you there!

-Hyland Baron

Brazilian Walnut Hardwood Flooring For Sale

I have approximately 200 square feet of Brazilian Walnut hardwood flooring for sale. The material is surplus from the new floor I had installed. The slats are 2 3/4" wide and vary in length. These are unfinished, so after installation, you need to have them finished (I can recommend a contractor if you need one). If you would like to see what it looks like installed and finished, please come by my loft 104 to check it out. I am asking $4.00 per sq/ft OBO.

Parking Garage Water

Dear FSL Residents,

The parking garage water was supposed to be vacuumed up by IGMS, our janitorial service today. I am not sure why this did not happen, but we are checking into it.

Thanks for your patience.

Fourth Street Lofts Task List

OK, this is a first cut on this sort of thing. We're all learning, so this may not be the most ideal way to post this, but I encourage Home Owners to have a look at our version 0.5 Task List.

Currently, the document is a static HTML file. If I see a need, I might consider making this page a live web form so that the board could keep track of on-going tasks from a web browser.

Fourth Street Lofts List Server

In an attempt to deal with spammers, I have replaced the old "everyone" e-mail alias with an official mailing list. This list has many advantages over the old alias. It is a subsription service - YOU decide whether or not your name appears on the list. You may subscribe or un-subscribe at any time, and a copy of all messages sent to the list is kept on the server "forever".

To ensure privacy, and keep spammers at bay, new members must be approved by the list moderator before being added to the mailing list, and only list members may view names of other list members or message archives.

If you'd like to learn more about this mailing list, edit your profile or un-subscribe, click here.

MONTHLY MEETING
The Fourth Street Lofts Board of Directors meet the third Monday of each month, and all owners are invited. The next meeting will Monday 21 February 2005 in Loft #105 at 7:00pm, and the Homeowners' Forum is at the top of the Agenda, which is posted on our FSL website.

CONSTRUCTION
There are no fewer than four separate projects in progress in our immediate vicinity. We are surrounded on all sides now by construction. It's going to be a long summer.

Across the street from our front door at Alice and Fourth will be an eight-story Pulte building with lofts and retail. It is actively being worked.

Catty-corner from us, on Alice and Third Signature is about to begin its six-story lofts and retail building. They have moved the fence outside the current fence, so it now impinges on the dog-walking path. The big historic railroad trestle-thing was removed Thursday. A workman told Rick that it will be saved and used somehow. Eight trees are targeted for removal. The permit is up and the trees are tagged.

There are two other projects close by. One was Miller Meat at Jackson and Second which is actively being bulldozed. The other one used to be a small strip office park at Madison and Second, which is also being actively bulldozed.

We were the first work-live loft in the neighborhood, and look what we started.

As I was writing this I just experienced the largest clap of thunder I have ever heard - sounded like one of those building sites exploded.

PARAMOUNT MOVIE CLASSICS
The Paramount, at 2025 Broadway in Oakland is in another cycle of Movie Classics, and the three coming up are variations on a theme - a mini film festival as it were. Three versions of the same story, starting with "Shop Around the Corner" this Friday 18 February 2005. The second is "In The Good Old Summertime" on Friday 11 March 2005. The last is Friday 25 March 2005 and it's "You've Got Mail." All movies start at 8pm, preceded by a half hour of live organ music on The Mighty Wurlitzer. Each evening's program includes a newsreel, cartoon, Coming Attractions and Dec-O-Win where one can win dinners at local/Jack London Square restaurants. This cycle of movies has sponsorship from Kincaid's in JLS.

An interesting thing about the newsreels and cartoons is that they are selected to go along with

LOBBY ART
Several of you have asked about the interesting wall art we have in our front lobby. It is an Encaustic and was done in 2001 by our own PAULETTA CHANCO, whose studio is on the fourth floor. The title is "Liminal Bridges."

In layman's terms, encausing means a method of painting using pigments with wax fixed onto the surface by heat. The word used as a noun is a work of art produced by this process. The word is Latin with Greek origins, from enkaiein (to burn in).

Liminal means transitional space between two levels of life, such as puberty into adulthood, youth into marriage, aging into dying, etc.

Liminal is an anthropology term coined in 1925 by the French anthropologist, Arnold Van Gennep when he was researching 'rites of passage' in different tribal cultures.

Pauletta got the idea for this work when she thought about our unique Live/Work, urban community here at Fourth Street Lofts and in the Jack London District, and how we attempt to build bridges for seamless transitions between our work and everyday lives. She also sees a transition into how we all try to maintain a sense of community with one another despite our differences, and how we try to move towards more neighborly intimacy with compassion and greater understanding.

Visitors and residents in the lobby can spend time contemplating the piece, especially while waiting for busy elevator.

And from personal experience watching it in process, I know it is long, hard work. There were many many layers of wax and paint embedded on the wall to produce the textured surface. It is sort of a fusion of the two mediums.

It took Pauletta several weeks of hard work to make this lovely piece of artwork which is a permanent part of our lobby.

FOOD BARREL
It was taken away this week by the Alameda Food Bank, and embarrassingly enough, it was only a quarter full after being in the Mail Room Lobby for the past four months.

DEJA VU
Interesting things one sees when one watches late nite TV. I like Nash Bridges, because of the scenery. Many of the location shoots are right in our own neighborhood. One day years ago I watched them shoot scenes at the Amtrak station, and learned there were four different versions of Nash's yellow 'Cuda - all with different suspension setups for different driving and/or chase scenes.

In a recent episode called "Girl Trouble," our building front was shown, as was the Amtrak station. It also showed the Tower Lofts - front, lobby and one of the West lofts on the top floor. Some other episodes show Portico Lofts.

THANK YOU KATHY LEMMN
Kathy lives at Portico Lofts and last Friday she cleaned up around all the neighborhood Trash Cans. Those would be the decorative Trash Cans installed by our neighborhood association - the ones with the red and yellow plaques describing neighborhood buildings.

GARAGE DOOR UPDATE

Overhead Door was able to fix the mechanical part of our garage door, but they need to send an electrical guy out to fix some other problems that were identified. He is supposed to arrive at 1:00 In the future, if the door stops working, we are supposed to be able to switch the door to manual mode so that it can be raised and lowered manually. The chain jumped off the pulley yesterday, which I am told almost never happens. I also learned that they believe that there is something wrong with the door itself and Overhead Door is working with the manufacturer under warranty to remedy the situation. Thanks.

ANOTHER GARAGE DOOR UPDATE

After much confusion (its a long story), Overhead Door is going to be on site to fix the parking garage door at 7:00 am tomorrow. We hope that this will be early enough to get the door repaired in time for people to be able to get out of the garage early enough for work.

I apologize in advance if this approach will cause a problem for you. We hope that this will be the last repair job needed for our new door.

Chase

GARAGE DOOR UPDATE

Overhead Door is supposed to be here in about 30 minutes to repair the door. It is not guaranteed that they will be able to fix it tonight, but let's hope so...

Thanks.

GARAGE DOOR BROKEN

Dear FSL Residents,

The parking garage door is not functioning as of this evening. Collins Management has been notified and they are attempting to contact Overhead Door to make an emergency repair. It is possible that the repairs may not be completed by tomorrow morning, but I am not sure at this point. If not, your car may be stuck in the garage for a while, so you may need to make alternate travel arrangements.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but we're on it.

Thanks.

Architectural Committee Change Request Form pdf.png

I have created a "fillable" version of the Architectural Committee Change Request Form. The form is an Adobe PDF, and so should work on any machine with Acrobat Reader 6.0 or better installed. The form can be filled out on-screen and printed for submission to the Architectural Review Committee. It can not be submitted on-line. I doubt that there will be enough of these forms submitted each year to justify and on-line database - yet.

Debris Removal Clarification

Most of you should have heard by now about the Fourth Street Lofts Debris Removal scheduled for Friday 11 March 2005.

I'd just like to clarify what exactly constitutes debris and common areas for this event, so there are no surprises on that day.

Debris is anything left in the common areas, which means anything left in the garage, in a parking stall, under the garage ramp or in the corners. It also includes items left in stairwells.

It does not mean bicycles in/near the Bike Rack on the first floor.
Ladders will be removed and put in the FSL Garage Storage Locker.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
