A Note from the President of the Crucible

(By way of Gary Knecht...)

Dear Friends, Colleagues, People I admire, and Folks it's just been too dang long since I seen ya!

I hope this email finds you well and perhaps even without plans for Saturday night...

For the past six months I've served as the board president of an incredible arts organization in West Oakland: The Crucible.

"The Crucible is an arts education center that fosters a collaboration of arts, industry and community. Through training in the fine and industrial arts, The Crucible promotes creative expression, reuse of materials and innovative design while serving as an accessible arts venue for the public."

And Saturday is the premier of our very own reality TV show on the National Geographic Channel! Dubbed the "Mother of All," each episode involves the fabrication of an out-of-this-world project designed to be the ultimate of its kind. You'll see a refrigerator with a cannon that shoots a can of soda up three stories in a controlled arc; and a raft that glides as smoothly on top of land as it does on water -- all lovingly and daringly fabricated by Crucible design teams. (This will be a first for me as well, as I have not watched TV in 14 years; I hear there are more than 4 channels now!)

My fellow board member Fred Winslow will pour molten bronze into a mold; fire performers will sling flaming objects around; and we'll be auctioning all sorts of goodies! You could win a barbecue party with The Mother of all "fire" trucks, or a chance to appear as a guest builder on a future episode! Catch quality entertainment as Crucible characters weld, carve and cast their way to TV superstardom.

You may have seen the article about the show and the Crucible in Wednesday's Chronicle.

Refreshments and fire-cooked cuisine will be served. Suggested donation $10. Rsvp is not required, but I'd love to hear from you either way.

Please see our website for directions. We'll have folks onsite directing you to the best places to park.... most likely at the lot between the Crucible and the BART station on 7th Street.

Hope to see you there!
