A Question from Chris Christiansen

Hello all,

A while back I was told that the (roughly) t-shaped holes in our cement ceilings are made to hold hangers for very heavy objects. Can anyone verify this? My desire is to hold a chandelier of about 120 lbs.

Warm regards to all,
Chris, 203

I'm NOT an expert on such things, and I welcome comments from other owners. Here's what I was able to find. (Thanks Google!)

These "spot inserts" will hold far more than 120 lbs. I used to work in a factory that had these same hooks in the ceiling. We hung very heavy shelves from them - shelves weighing several hundred pounds - at least. Of course, we had the rectangular nuts that were made to work with these inserts. Does anyone have any?

I will bow to jim's opinion about the weight, but I have swung and bounced on mine, say 180 lbs plus shock loads, with no signs of failure, they appear to be cast, of steel or iron, perhaps brittle and no clue as to how interlocked they are in the matrix.

As to nuts, they are probably comercially available but what I have done is taken 1 1/4" by 1/4" flat bar and cut a length that will just slide in and then drilled and tapped a 5/16" bolt tread into it. make the bolt (eyebolt or whatever) long enough to bear against the top of the socket and it locks it into place. Got a couple of boats hanging from our ceiling that way.

If you call and come by I'll show you what I have
done.
